"The Inquisition was a Catholic Church tribunal that existed to protect the Church from heresy. There were many inquisitorial tribunals in different nations and at different times beginning in the 13th century. Some of these were more powerful than others, but all inspired fear in the hearts of those called to appear before them. During the late 16th century and into the 17th, the Church was in a battle for survival. Protestantism was spreading throughout Europe and the Church, believing that it had to defend its primary theological precepts against the heresy of Protestantism, instituted another version of the Inquisition. It was before this tribunal that Galileo was called to defend himself against heresy, a charge brought against him because of his teaching that the earth revolved around the sun and that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the universe (heliocentric theory). Copernicus had said that about 100 years before. His theory had been condemned by the Church as heretical since it seemed to contradict the Bible and, therefore, Church teaching which said that the earth was the center of the universe (geocentric theory). However, contrary to what most people think, the Church did not actually oppose the science behind Galileo's theory of a sun-centered universe. In fact, quite a few of those Churchmen who sat in judgement of Galileo were themselves scientists. What the Church was afraid of was that Galileo's theory would lead to an individual interpretation of Scripture and that was something the Church feared. Remember that the Church was at this time involved in fighting and defeating the Protestant movement spreading throughout Europe. Galileo, therefore, had to be stopped at all cost! What exactly happened when Galileo was ordered to appear before the Inquisition tribunal? It's interesting to note here that Pope Urban VIII who ordered Galileo to stand trial had been admirer of his. In fact, while still a cardinal, he had written a poem about Galileo's ideas. What finally destroyed Galileo was not his scientific theories, but the fact that he was publishing those theories as fact. He had already been ordered by the previous Pope not to publish his theories. The Church now felt it necessary to silence Galileo because they felt that his ideas, if accepted by the masses, could undermine the power of the Church at that time. The Church believed that the uneducated masses would not be able to reconcile the science of Galileo's universe with the theology of the Scripture. Remember the Church was fighting a religious war against the Protestants! After being questioned for eighteen long days, Galileo, tired and ill, offered to write a book refuting his idea that the sun was the center of the universe. The offer was accepted, but that was not enough to please the court. Galileo was forced to retract his beliefs in a public ceremony at the Church of Santa Maria Sofia Minerva. There he said I, Galileo Galilei, son of the late Vincenzio Galilei of Florence, aged 70 years, tried personally by this court, and kneeling before You, the most Eminent and reverend Lord Cardinals, Inquisitors-General throughout the Christian Republic against heretical depravity, having before my eyes the Most Holy Gospels, and laying on them my own hands; I swear that I have always believed, I believe now, and with God's help I will in future believe all which the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church doth hold, preach, and teach. But since I, after having been admonished by this Holy Office entirely to abandon the false opinion that the Sun was the centre of the universe and immoveable, and that the Earth was not the centre of the same and that it moved, and that I was neither to hold, defend, nor teach in any manner whatever, either orally or in writing, the said false doctrine; and after having received a notification that the said doctrine is contrary to Holy Writ, I did write and cause to be printed a book in which I treat of the said already condemned doctrine, and bring forward arguments of much efficacy in its favour, without arriving at any solution: I have been judged vehemently suspected of heresy, that is, of having held and believed that the Sun is the centre of the universe and immoveable, and that the Earth is not the centre of the same, and that it does move.Nevertheless, wishing to remove from the minds of your Eminences and all faithful Christians this vehement suspicion reasonably conceived against me, I abjure with sincere heart and unfeigned faith, I curse and detest the said errors and heresies, and generally all and every error and sect contrary to the Holy Catholic Church. And I swear that for the future I will neither say nor assert in speaking or writing such things as may bring upon me similar suspicion; and if I know any heretic, or one suspected of heresy, I will denounce him to this Holy Office, or to the Inquisitor and Ordinary of the place in which I may be... Galileo could have been imprisoned or even sentenced to death for his actions, but because of the intervention of his many friends in high places, Galileo was sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life! During his house arrest, Galileo wrote Discourse on Two New Sciences, a book which summarized his law of motion and his mechanical research, and which lay the foundations for classical physics(The full text of Galileo's statement denying his belief in the heliocentric theory can be found at http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1630galileo.html)"
